A new robot from CES 2021

Man’s best friend could enter into competition with robot dogs, and KODA may be one of them. This robot dog, presented at CES 2021 by KODA Inc., offers emotional and practical companionship, physical support, and it’s the first equipped with a decentralized A.I. even though it looks like Boston Dynamics’ Spot.

KODA Inc.’s robotic dog comes with four 3D cameras, a single 13-megapixel front-facing camera, an ergonomic structure that incorporates realistic dog-like features such as a purely aesthetic tail, 14 high-torque motors with two on the neck offering full-range mobility for activities like climbing the stairs or trudging through snow, along with an 11 Teraflop processing unit.

KODA Inc. provides technology-based solutions to help people with everyday problems, either chronic or otherwise, and its secure blockchain network is closely monitored and cross-checked for consistent and effective A.I. improvements allowing it to share data so that something learned by a single robot could be used for each of them.

Decentralized A.I. essentially equips the built-in software with the ability to solve the reasoning, planning, learning, and decision-making problems that centralized Artificial Intelligence does not compute. By endowing the robotic dog with this kind of A.I. technological capabilities, KODA Inc. provides a robotic, smart companion that can offer care and guidance for several different purposes including but not limited to, simple companionship, walking guidance for blind users, protective services such as a tech-savvy guard dog (even though Koda says the robot can’t be aggressive towards humans, and each unit will develop its own unique set of skills depending on the different things they encounter), or can operate as a personal assistant capable of solving ordinarily complex issues.

This is another technology that will surely be helpful but we can’t help thinking about what implications will have for real dogs. Will they be replaced? Will stray dogs increase in numbers? We’ll surely have to think about it.
