The initiative started in 2001 and in 2013 became an official UN day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanitation is a global problem: about<strong>&nbsp;4.2 billion people<\/strong>&nbsp;live without a toilet. Every day, about&nbsp;<strong>800 children<\/strong>&nbsp;die because of water-related diseases and diarrhea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sustainable Development Goal 6,<\/strong>&nbsp;established by the UN, has the target to eliminate open defecation and ensure everyone has access to a toilet by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open defecation is against human rights, both for men and women, but especially for the latter because they are more discriminated against. The lack of privacy and toilets makes it difficult for women to handle menstruation and pregnancy. So women stay home during menstruation if the school or workplace doesn\u2019t have adequate sanitation services. Moreover, they often go out when it\u2019s dark, not to be seen, but they are vulnerable to violence. In addition, some of them drink less to avoid going to the toilet often. This may cause urinary tract infections, chronic constipation, other gastric disorders, and dehydration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides, there are sanitation workers, who are essential, risking their health, safety, and dignity, too. They empty toilet pits and septic tanks; enter inspection holes and sewers to fix and\/or unlock them; transport fecal matter; work at treatment plants; and look at sanitation facilities. They face the possibility of disease and even death, so they deserve the highest level of protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So a toilet is not just a toilet, but it&#8217;s a life-saver and dignity-protector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year the World Toilet Day has a different theme. Here is a list of the themes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2017 \u2013&nbsp;<strong>Wastewater:<\/strong>&nbsp;a safe and sustainable treatment of wastewater.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2018 \u2013 <strong>When nature calls<\/strong>: is about taking action to ensure that everyone has a safe toilet by 2030.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2019 \u2013 <strong>Leaving no one behind<\/strong>: This aims to draw attention to the people who are being left behind without sanitation and the social, economic, and environmental consequences of inaction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2020 \u2013 <strong>Sustainable sanitation and climate change<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2021 \u2013 <strong>Valuing toilets.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2022 \u2013 Making the Invisible Visible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2023 \u2013&nbsp;Accelerating change through investing in climate-resilient sanitation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2024 \u2013&nbsp;Toilets, a Place for Peace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2025 \u2013&nbsp;Sanitation in a
