What should have been mundane became nightmarish when she spotted something inexplicable: a black shoe protruding from the squat toilet opening, lodged firmly in place.
Disturbed by the sight, Tanaka traced the plumbing system outside to the septic tank. Her worst fears were confirmed—a human body lay submerged in the waste below.
The impossible extraction
Emergency responders faced an immediate problem. The victim was wedged inside a pipe measuring just 14 inches in diameter—narrower than the average adult male shoulder width of 15 inches at that time. The physical impossibility was apparent from the start.
Fire crews were forced to excavate the surrounding earth and extract the entire section of pipe. When they finally cut it open, they discovered a body contorted in an unnatural position: knees pressed tightly against the head, torso twisted to face upward toward the toilet opening. The victim wore pants and clutched a coat against his chest.
Remarkably, there were no visible signs of trauma—no bruises, cuts, or bleeding. Medical examiners determined the cause of death was hypothermia. But the question that would haunt investigators remained: how did he get there?
The victim’s identity
The deceased was identified as Naoyuki Kanno, a well-regarded 28-year-old employee of the local power company. Known throughout Miyakoji for his community involvement and work mentoring young people, Kanno seemed an unlikely figure for such a bizarre death.
Four days before his body was discovered, he had informed his father he was running errands. He never returned home. His vehicle was later found near a local farm, unlocked with keys in the ignition—suggesting he intended to come back. Within 24 hours, he was dead in the septic system beneath the elementary school.
The official explanation
Despite the disturbing circumstances, authorities classified Kanno’s death as accidental. Their theory: he had intentionally entered the pipe to spy on women using the restroom above—a practice sometimes referred to in sensationalist terms as voyeurism.
Tabloid media amplified unsubstantiated rumors connecting Kanno romantically to Tanaka, though no evidence ever supported these claims. The voyeurism explanation quickly became the official narrative despite widespread skepticism.
