Poo-powered SUV

A real sustainable driving

What if poop could power your car? Aussies made this possible with an SUV fuelled with sewage which can travel half a Km with your daily poo using electricity.

The power used to charge the vehicle is produced when biogas from a sewage treatment plant is fed into an engine that generates electricity.

The SUV, or rather an S-Poo-V, is the most recent addition to the fleet of Urban Utilities, one of the largest water retailers in Australia. The car is a Hyundai Kona Electric aptly named the ‘Number 2’.

“They might not realize it, but more than 330,000 people in Brisbane’s south and west are helping to create fuel for our poo-powered cars every time they flush”, said Urban Utilities spokesperson Anna Hartley said.

“Poo power doesn’t only help keep our cars on the road, it also helps us run our two largest wastewater treatment plants”, added she.

Power used to charge the SUV is produced when water from the Oxley wastewater treatment plant in Brisbane is fed into a giant machine that generates electricity. To power one full charge of the car, it requires 150,000 liters of sewage.

The company said turning poo into power is helping it to save around $1.7 million a year in operating costs and the process results in zero emissions from the car.

I know you were expecting to take a poo straight from the seat, but it’s still too early for that.
